ORGANIZATION'S HISTORY AND OBJECTIVES
In the summer of 1988 an “ad hoc” committee
was formed to organize a fund raising event to benefit the “Brandie
Schieb Children’s Fund.” The event was called “evening with
the Stars” and succeeded in raising over $25,000 to help the innocent
victims of the Vietnam War who were born with birth defects caused by a parents
exposure to Agent Orange while serving their country in Vietnam
A year later, the organizers of the committee decided
to reorganize, incorporate and officially become known as the Veterans Who
Care Committee, Inc. By-laws were adopted by the twelve charter members with
Article I stating the purpose of the organization, that is
“To raise funds through a variety of means for the purpose of helping
veterans or their families in need, and the funds raised to be distributed
through appropriate charitable organizations or directly to the recipient
of appropriate qualifications.”
The Committee members serve as the board of directors and determine the recipients
for grants, and will, at times, remain non-political and independent from
government agencies, political parties, religious groups and other veteran
organizations.
There are a variety of issues and problems facing veterans today. Government
agencies help those who meet their criteria and qualify for assistance, but
others receive little or no help at all. This is where the Veterans Who Care
Committee comes in. A veteran need only provide proof that he or she was honorably
discharged from the Armed Forces of the United States, and the veteran and/or
family will qualify for assistance if the need is legitimate. We have and
will continue to provide assistance to the children helped by the “Brandie
Schieb Children’s Fund,” homeless veterans, disabled and unemployed
veterans, those with medical problems with little or no insurance coverage,
and to any veteran who, for whatever the reason, needs help.
Information regarding a veteran and/or family of a veteran who need assistance
should be referred to the committee by calling (203) 723-5167 or writing the
above address. Contributions to our veteran assistance programs are always
welcome and should be made payable to: Vets Who Care. Donations are tax deductible
(TAX ID# 06-1270862) under 501(c)(3) as a public charity.
We, The members of the Veterans Who Care Committee, Inc., are a group of concerned
veterans whose sole purpose is to help our fellow veterans and their families
who are in need.
